What is wellness? The 8 Aspects of Holistic Wellness

Wellness has become a buzzword in our culture — often reduced to green smoothies, workout trends, or spa days. But true wellness goes much deeper than that.

At Healing with Hilery, I use a holistic wellness wheel inspired by Ayurvedic philosophy, which views wellness as a dynamic balance of eight interconnected aspects. When one area is out of alignment, it affects the entire system — like a flat tire on a wheel.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just “off,” this blog will guide you through each spoke of the wheel and help you identify where your wellness might need a little extra attention.

👉 Rate yourself in each area from 1 to 10. Where are you thriving? Where could you uplevel?

Physical Wellness

When out of balance: You may feel sluggish, inflamed, bloated, unwell, or in chronic pain. You might suffer from fatigue, digestive issues, skin problems, insomnia, or recurring illness.

When in balance: You feel energized, clear, pain-free, and radiant. Your body feels like a supportive home — not a burden.

Ask Yourself:
  • How do I feel when I wake up each morning?
  • Do I nourish my body with movement, rest, and real food?

Emotional Wellness

When out of balance: You might feel emotionally reactive, easily triggered, or stuck in long-term moods. You may bottle up emotions or bypass them with toxic positivity, religion, or busyness.

When in balance: You allow emotions to flow without labeling them as good or bad. You express yourself fully and return to a centered, calm state with ease.

Ask Yourself:
  • Am I feeling my feelings or stuffing them down?
  • Do I have safe spaces for emotional expression?

Spiritual Wellness

When out of balance: You may feel disconnected from your intuition, divine guidance, or higher Self. You might experience a loud inner critic or live based on other people’s expectations.

When in balance: You feel deeply connected to a higher power or purpose. You trust your intuition, live with gratitude, and align your actions with your highest values.

Ask Yourself:
  • What lights me up on a soul level?
  • Do I live according to what I believe is sacred?

Relationship Wellness

When out of balance: You may struggle with boundaries, people-pleasing, codependency, or toxic relationships. You might silence your needs or criticize others to protect your heart.

When in balance: You feel seen, heard, and supported in your relationships. Boundaries are respected. You speak your truth with love and listen with compassion.

Ask Yourself:
  • Do I feel safe being my full self around others?
  • Are my relationships supportive, reciprocal, and clear?

Occupational Wellness

When out of balance: You may feel stuck in a job you don’t love, burned out, or unsure of your life’s purpose. You may lack motivation or feel like you're just going through the motions.

When in balance: You feel fulfilled by your work or daily activities. You know your life has meaning, and you spend your time in ways that reflect your soul's purpose.

Ask Yourself:
  • Do I love how I spend my energy each day?
  • Am I creating a life that feels aligned with who I am?

Environmental Wellness

When out of balance: Your home, workspace, or surroundings may feel cluttered, stressful, or chaotic. You might avoid certain rooms or feel overwhelmed by disorganization.

When in balance: Your environment feels peaceful and supports your energy. Your spaces are clean, organized, and inspiring. You care about your impact on the planet.

Ask Yourself:
  • How does my environment reflect my inner state?
  • What space around me needs a little love and attention?

Financial Wellness

When out of balance: You may feel scarcity-driven, fear-based, or overwhelmed by debt. You might avoid looking at your finances or feel anxious around spending or receiving.

When in balance: You feel empowered and peaceful about money. You trust that you are supported and make conscious, aligned decisions with your finances.

Ask Yourself:
  • Do I feel safe and empowered in my relationship with money?
  • Am I practicing gratitude and abundance, even while working toward goals?

Healing the Past

When out of balance: You carry shame, guilt, anger, or resentment. You get emotionally triggered by the past. You may distract, numb, or stay busy to avoid it.

When in balance: You’ve done the deep healing work — whether through therapy, inner child work, coaching, or your own spiritual process. You’re no longer triggered and feel peace when looking back.

Ask Yourself:
  • Are there any past wounds that still hold emotional charge?
  • Have I fully forgiven — others and myself?
