Gate 12 lives in the Throat Center, the place of manifestation and communication. When you have this gate defined, especially if it's connected to Gate 22 from the Solar Plexus, you may feel an emotional pull toward artistic or impactful expression—spoken word, poetry, music, or even spiritual teaching.
But this expression isn’t always available on demand. It moves in waves, like all emotional energy. You may feel blocked or silent when your emotions aren’t ripe. But when the timing is right, what pours through you can be life-changing.
The shadow of Vanity is an emotional craving for attention, validation, or significance. It's not just about ego in the loud sense; it can be subtle, showing up as performance, self-consciousness, or a need to curate how you're seen.
- It’s about performing instead of expressing.
- It’s when we craft our image or words for applause rather than connection.
- It’s when we withhold our truth because we fear it won’t be received the way we want.
You might recognize this as the “spiritual influencer” trap—the desire to be seen as evolved, enlightened, or poetic without doing the raw inner work. The irony is, the more we try to appear a certain way, the more our authenticity is lost.
This shadow thrives in the collective field of social media, public platforms, and even spiritual spaces. It’s the subtle art of polishing our presentation while hiding the vulnerable truth.
Shadow Expressions: Repressed and Reactive
Repressed: You silence your voice completely. You don’t trust your truth to be heard or valued, so you stay quiet—cutting yourself off from the gift you carry.
Reactive: You become overly performative. You use words or emotion to manipulate, impress, or gain validation instead of to serve or inspire.
Shadow Reflection Questions:
- When do I find myself performing instead of expressing?
- How often do I seek approval before I speak or share my truth?
- Am I more concerned with how I appear than how I feel?
- Do I withhold my true voice for fear it might not be accepted?
- In what ways do I manipulate my expression to gain admiration or avoid rejection?
Discrimination in this context doesn’t mean judgment—it means discernment. It’s the ability to feel into the energy behind what you say (and what others say). It’s the knowing of when to speak, how to speak, and why you’re speaking.
This is the gift of elegant communication. Not necessarily polished—but precise. Intentional. True. This gift allows your words to carry weight, not because they are loud or clever, but because they’re real.
When you embody discrimination, your voice becomes medicine. You speak only what needs to be said, and people feel the frequency behind your words.
Gift Reflection Questions:
- Can I feel the difference between speaking from my heart and speaking from my wounds?
- Where am I being invited to use my voice more intentionally?
- How can I honor both silence and expression as sacred tools?
- Do I recognize when my words carry weight and when it’s better to wait?
The Siddhi of Purity is the transcendent expression of this key. It’s not moral purity—it’s energetic. It’s when your speech becomes a direct expression of divine love. There’s no self-consciousness here, no calculation, no manipulation. Just essence flowing through sound.
Purity means you’ve released the need to perform. You don’t speak to be liked, or even to teach—you speak because truth is moving through you. And in that space, your presence becomes transformational.

2. Cleanse Your Voice
Are your words born from love, or from a need to be seen, praised, or approved? Expressing truth from a place of emotional balance—not reactivity—is part of this gift.
Try:
- Journaling to explore where your voice feels free vs. filtered
- Breathwork or humming to clear throat chakra energy
- Asking yourself: “Does this need to be said? By me? Now?”
3. Create with Intention
Art, poetry, music, speaking—all are channels of this key. Discrimination helps you bring beauty into the world without attachment to how it’s received.
Try:
- Sharing your creative work without overexplaining or justifying
- Creating for the sake of beauty and truth—not for approval
- Speaking affirmations aloud to practice aligned self-expression
